SUMMARY:Fame in the Digital Age: A Sociological Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Click here to join the talk on YouTube Live \nCultural critics argue that we are obsessed with fame.  They say we are fixated on the famous\, and a lot of us covet it.  In some form\, isn’t just about everyone playing out a performance on TikTok\, Instagram\, Twitter\, or Facebook? \nIn this discussion\, we explore the topics of fame and celebrity through the prism of sociology\, the study of human group behavior.  We discuss: \n\nwhat it means to be “famous”\,\nhow fame is created\,\nhow fame is used to influence and profit\,\nhow fame is sustained and fades\, and\nhow “cancellation” is supposed to work\, and how it often works\n\nThis discussion presents part of Professor Joseph Cohen’s research on podcasting and content creation entrepreneurship.  Professor Cohen\, Professor Ryan Sperry and other collaborators are currently conducting research on the podcasting medium\, the evolving podcast industry\, and the larger cultural field of podcasting.  This research is based on interviews of podcasting entrepreneurs and subfield experts\, and through field experimentation through the Queens Podcast Lab. \nOn YouTube Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh6nF5cA9OI \nPhoto Credit.By Ben Sherman – Own work\, Public Domain\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3731410

SUMMARY:Hosting Podcasts
DESCRIPTION:This discusses contemplates the task of hosting podcasts.  Many podcast franchises succeed on the strength of their hosts. Hosts influence the character of podcast series.  A great host can be the reason that people connect with a podcast.  Bad hosting can ruin even the best show concept.  A host’s performance is an important determinant of a podcast’s success. \nWe will discuss the job of hosting.  Expected topics include: \n\nWhat does a host do?  Functional roles of a host.\nIs there a formula to hosting well?\nResearch and show preparation\nTips on managing small group interactions\nWhat makes for an “engaging” performance?\n“Authenticity”\n\nPhoto Credit.By Radio Album magazine\, published by Dell Publications; page 3 of PDF identifies publisher and year of copyright. – OTRR.org copy of Radio Album magazine-winter 1949. SUMMARY:Telling Stories
DESCRIPTION:People tell stories whenever they relay a sequence of causally-related events.  Generating and relaying stories is an important facet of content creation.  Recounting funny anecdotes\, telling a history\, explaining how a task or issue\, or replaying the details of a clever heist are all examples of producing stories.  People who are good at constructing stories have an advantage in the field of podcasting.\n\nIn this discussion\, we sit down with Queens Podcast Lab co-Director Jason Tougaw\, who is also a Professor of English at Queens College\, an expert on storytelling\, and author of Elusive Brain: Literary Experiments in Age of Neuroscience.  We discuss storytelling\, the construction of narrative\, choices when developing stories\, and his views on what it takes to be good at the craft of story development.
